How do I find the origin of the expression "like a chinese menu"?

Hi. I need to know where "like a chinese menu" came from and its intended/modern use. Or I need to know how to look it up. Any help would be really appreciated. How do I find the origin of the expression "like a chinese menu"?
This refers to the fact that many Chinese menus allow the customer to put together a combination meal by choosing from a selection of items in various categories, e.g., soup, appetizer, main course, dessert. It is sometimes also referenced by saying "Take one from column A and one from column B."

This most recently received attention because of an interview on Barack Obama's stance on Christianity in which he seemed to pick and choose among various Christian beliefs without committing to the whole thing.
I think you can learn some Chinese culture or mandarin first. How do I find the origin of the expression "like a chinese menu"?
