What is vegan at Chinese or Asian restaurants?

It seems to me as if whenever I go to Chinese, Japanese or other Asian restaurants, the wait staff are foreigners and don't understand what vegan means. But they DO understand what vegetarian means. So how am I supposed to tell what's vegetarian and what's vegan? Is it possible that something on their menu can be vegetarian, but NOT vegan? Like what?What is vegan at Chinese or Asian restaurants?

they use LOTS of grease in their food. chinese are famous for greasy foods and, as you know, its derived from the warm blooded.



rice is nice. tea. tossed salad.



noodle dishes usually have some kind of flavor added with animal byproducts.



chinese people like their meat.
dont ask if you dont want a scene ;)

Steer clear of the egg drop soup, for a start. :)



There's hardly any cheese, butter or milk used in most asian cuisines. Most asians are lactose-intolerant to some degree.



I wouldn't assume that oyster sauce or fish sauce isn't used in a vegetarian dish, however. There's a cultural disconnect with condiments and flavourings that I've experienced more than once.
If they do not know what the term vegan means, ask them if products have meat, eggs, dairy, etc. instead of using the term vegan. Many tofu dishes can be vegan and there are probably tons of veggie dishes you can chose from. Sometimes i will even see a dish that looks good and request it without products i can't eat or substitute ingredients. Ask about everything, even some sauces can contain dairy, whey or meat based broths.
China doesn't really have any vegan tradition. Also, many vegetables are cooked in lard (pig fat).
tell them you're on a special diet and can eat rice, veg and tofu and beansprouts. ask them to make something for you. most chefs are glad of the chance to use their talents instead of having to make the same thing all the time.

be advised if you say vegetarian in a chinese restaurant, that basically means the dish is vegetables, but doesn't mean there are no animal products used. tea and rice are a safe bet, after that forget about it. better you go to a vegan restaurant that serves some "asian style" dishes.
Well rice is vegan, so would vegetable teriyaki be...tempura wouldn't be because of the batter containing animal products.



At a chinese restaurant though, try buddhist delight...it's vegetable dish in a light sauce and it's vegan

anything that doesn't contain meat, should be safe to be called vegan. milk is rarely used in asia, although eggs are common. I wouldn't worry about eggs, I make an exception for them.
what do u expect, many wait staff just stepped off from a flying boat
